It was three years ago today that our kooky, fun-filled, sweet, curious little man entered the world. Happy Birthday George.
Popsicle!
I didn’t think much of it at the time, just another day in the life of being the working Mom of a two year old. In fact I almost trashed the files while cleaning up my computer. Let’s just say, this is what happens when you ask your toddler son to sit in for a lighting test.
The current issue of Country Living has a story I shot on this really great bar and it’s smart owner Bridget Dunlap. She owns a few bars in some old refurbished houses here in Austin. It’s worth checking out just to see how she kept some of the original details of the homes. Plus tasty drinks, a food truck and hula hoops don’t hurt either.
In the course of shooting a travel story this week in Austin, I came across something surprising behind the guest house I was photographing. Right there, only a few blocks from the masses of people hanging out on South Congress, a chicken coop. I wasn’t sure if coops were legal in the Austin city limits but yes, other than some limitations on their proximity to a home and a no roosters allowed, they’re legal. Now much to the chagrin of my husband I know. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but one day I will have one.
Helping to decorate.
My favorite quote from last week’s shoot was “you’re so patient with kids”. The first thing that popped into my mind was the decibel of my voice when I finally lost my cool with my 2 and half year old the night before. I can only ask, cajole, bribe and beg George so many times to come to me so I can put him in a freaking diaper. I guess we’re always more patient with other people’s kids than our own. I was shooting a new line of bathtime products for Skip Hop that are adorable. But that day no one wanted to sit in a hooded bath towel while I took their picture.
Some of my work is featured on the blog The Pink Chalkboard. It’s written by two friends who post about cool projects they’ve done and inspirations they find along the way. It’s always nice to have your work noticed.
Oysters! Stumbled across an image I shot a while back of an oyster farmer in Apalachicola, Florida. Those were tasty oysters. Truth be told I shot this in December, a much safer month to be eating Gulf Coast Oysters.
Summer reading on Fire Island.
Mark Bittman ran a post on his blog in June with one of my photos of the City Chicken Project. It’s a great project and my photos were a part of the Kickstarter incentives. So happy they made their funding goal. You can see the post here.
I recently had the opportunity to photograph the work, and portrait, of friend and handbag maker extraordinaire, Kathrin Heubeck. There is very little, I would imagine, Kathrin couldn’t manage to make out of leather, fabric, or building materials of any kind (she is also an architect by the way). I am the proud owner of one of her amazing bags and you could be too. Her website is coming soon.
We had an amazing weekend at the Brazilian Court Hotel in Palm Beach. Warm sunshine, cool ocean breezes, walking around barefoot in the sand. Now I’m back in rainy, gray NYC, sigh.
I found myself photographing city chickens a few weeks ago. I’m helping to document the amazing work of an organization called Just Food. Their program City Chickens helps community gardens around the city learn about keeping happy, healthy chickens.
